About Adrian Styer
Musician and evangelist | April 3, 1961 – August 2, 2011
The man who started it all
Adrian Styer was born on 3 April 1961 and grew up on the West Rand of Johannesburg. He got involved in drug and alcohol abuse from a very young age and this led him down a self-destructive path for 23 years, which saw him hit rock bottom. Adrian was a self-proclaimed atheist, but in September 1998, he reached out to God with this simple prayer: “Jesus, if You really exist, please help me.” and from that moment on God started leading him on journey of healing and recovery. Soon he met his wife and ministry partner, Meri and they got married and shared a vision and passion for helping others.

As Adrian overcame his addiction through his newfound faith in Jesus Christ, he felt a calling on his life to reach out to people struggling with addiction. He started visiting various rehabs on a weekly basis, using his incredible musical talent to inspire and motivate the guys there. As he started making friends with many of the people that he met during his visits to the rehabs, he realised that he wanted to walk a road with them and support them after they left rehab, so he decided to start 4 annual adventure camps where he could take some of these guys away for a weekend and show them that there is more to life than doing drugs. These camps gave Adrian the opportunity to impart a message of hope into the lives of ex-addicts, while giving them an opportunity to make friends with like-minded people and thus the Christian Friendship Community was born. Since that time Adrian and the Christian Friendship Community hosted over 26 camps, which has proven to be very fruitful. Adrian also established weekly support groups for ex-addicts in Pretoria and Johannesburg.

A life of sobriety
Sadly on 2 August 2011 Adrian was on his motorbike, heading home after ministering at one of the rehabs, when he had an accident that claimed his life. His passing away left the members of the Christian Friendship Community and everyone who knew him devastated. Adrian’s passion for life and his love for God and his fellow man inspired those who had the privilege of knowing him and those who are left with his legacy are compelled to carry on with the work he started through the Christian Friendship Community and the Adrian Styer Foundation.
Music played during the slideshow is AD’s own songs, written and composed by AD himself.
